Canon Technology: FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering)

FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) is an innovative key technology for inkjet printers developed by canon to meet the challenge of increasing image quality while also realizing faster print speeds.

Ejection mechanism for accurate placement of microscopic ink droplets as small as 1 picoliter*

Microscopic ink droplets and ejection precision are essential to high image quality. With conventional ejection systems, however, the finer the ink droplets, the more vulnerable they are to disturbances from print head movement and changes in ink viscosity due to temperature fluctuations, resulting in uneven and inconsistent ink dot placement.
*picoliter(pl): one trillionth of 1 liter

Pict 1. FINE Ink-Ejection Process

Canon's FINE ejection system ensures that
all the ink under the heater is pushed out in a single thrust that creates precise, uniform droplets. Additionally, by ejecting ink more efficiently, ink droplet ejection speed has been increased to more than 1.5 times that of conventional systems, reducing their susceptibility to airflow disturbances to enable increased placement accuracy.
For example, Canon PIXMA MP610 achieves excellent placement accuracy by ejecting ink droplets as small as 1 picoliter with exceptional precision.

Print head manufacturing technologies using nano-precision semiconductor exposure equipment

Achieving smaller droplet sizes and faster print speeds requires high precision fabrication technologies to enable the placement of a greater number of nozzles over a wider area. With ordinary inkjet printers, print heads are fabricated by bonding components fitted with fine grooves and holes. Limitations in the precision of component processing and bonding associated with this approach make it impossible to arrange a large number of nozzles in a precise, uniform manner.
Supported by the company's FINE technology, Canon print heads are made by integrating the heaters and nozzles into a single unit on a wafer using a process that makes the most of the company's expertise in semiconductor production, as well as its original material technologies and innovative processing technologies. The ability to fabricate nozzles with high precision over large areas without using bonding processes makes it possible to arrange 6,000 or more nozzles within an area measuring a mere 20 mm x 16 mm - roughly the size of a thumbprint.

Remaining Ink Level Detection Function of Canon Pixma iP1200,1300,1600,1700,1800,1880,2200,2580

Related Models:
Canon Pixma iP1200,1300,1600,1700,1800.1880,2200,2580

These printer have a function to detect the remaining ink level in the ink cartridge.
Detection method:
Dot counting (Counted for each BK/CL ink cartridge). Especially for CL cartridge: The remaining ink level is detected by total counted dot values of 3 colors of ink.
Display method:
Displayed on the Status Monitor (at 4 levels listed below for each BK/CL ink cartridge)
Level 1: Approx. 70% of ink remaining
Level 2: Approx. 40% of ink remaining
Level 3: Indication of “!” mark (Remaining ink level is low)
Level 4: Indication of “X” mark (No ink remaining)

Accuracy:
The margin of error of detection accuracy is +/-10% in normal printing.
The margin of error is likely to be large in the following specific print patterns:
When printing continuously using any one of the CMY colors of ink
> As the remaining ink level is calculated by the counted dot value of the least remaining ink of 3 colors, if any of the C/M/Y inks is heavily consumed, the margin of error for remaining ink increases.
When performing continuous BK solid printing
> With continuous printing, ink flow from the tank to the ink chamber can be
interrupted, after which ink remains unused in the tank.
- When a once-used ink cartridge is installed, the actual remaining ink level is not detected, and an error indicating the remaining ink amount is unknown occurs.
Deactivating ink level detection function will clear the error, and printing can be done. In other word, the function to detect the remaining ink amount is disabled (ink status is not displayed).
e.g.: An ink cartridge was once used in another printer.
A current ink cartridge is removed from the printer.
-> A new ink cartridge is installed.
->The removed ink cartridge is installed again after removing the new ink cartridge.
- Due to the specific print pattern, the actual remaining ink level does not match the indicated remaining ink level.
This is because a detection error can be large in specific print patterns (such as continuous printing using any one of the CMY colors of ink or continuous solid printing, etc.).

Error Message: More than one ink installed

Description:
Ink Detection Error

Related Model:
Canon pixma ip3300,3500,4200,4500,5200,6600,6700,ix4000,5000,pro9000,9500
mp500,520,530,820,mx700,800,6700

Here is the example of this problem i found in a site.
"I have a Canon Pixma MP500 all-in-one printer, and I have been receiving sporadic error messages. Either an ink is missing or “Error Number : 1681 More than one ink tank of the following color is installed. Magenta [8] Use only one ink tank per color at a time.” - both errors point to the Magenta ink tank."

Summary:
This problem appears in canon printer that uses ink cli series (e.g cli8,pg5b). As usual, printer will perform initialize test including in detection test. In this case, printer detects that two or more identical ink installed in print head. Ink cli series have built in chip to store information such as ink identity, ink level, etc. If this chip is fault then printer cannot collect the information from it. But in some cases (e.g short circuitry in the chip) it's possible that the chip harms other part such as carriage unit (carriage part). Since they are connected in parallel, it's often that carriage unit is wrong in detecting the ink. Beware of this problem!. Installing new ink tank to the printer with this current problem cause new ink damage too. So, if you got this problem please don't take any risk!. It strongly recommended that you replace carriage part and suspected ink tank.

How To Reset Ink Level of Fine Cartridge

I got some question ask how to reset ink level of fine cartridge such as pg40/cl41 and pg830/cl831 due to usage of refill ink . Hmm, I think this is great issue to discuss.

As a matter of fact, ink level of fine cartridge cannot be reset permanently. So, how to fix low ink message shows in status monitor of the printer?. There are 2 ways: by deactivating ink level detection function and by resetting ink level by using software iptool or mptool universal tools.  iptool used for ip series while mptool used for mp series. In this chance, we will discuss the second way.

These software (iptool & mptool), as far as i know, not officially released by Canon. It is probably third party software (any idea friend? tell me). I found it unpurposely in the web. When I try this software, ink level can be successfully reset and display bar in status monitor shows level 100% full.

To reset ink level by using this software perform these steps:

Using iptool (model used in this example is ip1880)

  • Make sure that printer driver has been installed.
  • Run iptool

Pict 1. Ink level before reset
  • Reset ink counter by clicking Reset Black & Reset Colour button.
  • Now ink level has been 100 % for each colour.

Pict 2. Ink level after reset is 100 % for each colour.

Note: Procedure using mptools is similar with using iptools.

Some notice in using these software:
  • iptool works only on model: ip1200/1300/1600/1700/1800 series/
  • mptool works only on model: mp150/160/170/180/450/
  • Do not installed the cartridge that ink level has been reset to another printer for ink level will be back to original condition.
  • Do not installed another cartridge in printer that used in resetting ink level for the same reason mentioned above.
After using these software I come to the conclusion:
  • These software can reset ink level of fine cartridge tentatively, not permanently due to condition mentioned above.
  • These software reset ink level of fine cartridge by manipulating ink level data that read and stored in printer but not reset memory chip of fine cartridge (since it cannot?!!).
  • These software does not support model not listed.
  • Ink level data shows properly as new cartridge as long as the cartridge is not changed.

Convertibility of Canon Printer

"After resetting waste ink counter my printer Canon Pixma ip1200 detected as Canon Pixma ip1600. What can I do?. How come?"
This panic printer user post his problem in Fixya.com where I active as one of expert there. Well, I want to inform you that some of canon inkjet printers are identical each other due to feature, electrical and mechanical system. Some of them fully convertible; we can change the model in some click without changing the hardware. While, some of them need logic board replacement to the equivalent models to convert.

Below are some of canon inkjet printers that fully convertible each other:
  • Canon i250,i255,i350,i355
  • Canon pixma iP1200,iP1600,iP2200
  • Canon pixma iP1300,iP1700
Product model above fully convertible by change product model. You need run General Tool from the computer to do this.

The following models are convertible by replace the logic board:
  • Canon S6300,i6100,i6500
  • Canon pixma ix4000/ix5000
Actually, more models are convertible. That just some of popular model we know. Remember, you have to know the following facts if you convert your printer model:
  • You need re-install printer driver to the model detected by the computer.
  • All EEPROM data will be lost (include waste ink counter, page count, etc) and can not be restore.
  • Some features may not work properly

Operational Mode of The Printer

Generally, the printer has 3 operational modes: user mode, service mode, special mode. User mode is condition which printer normally operates as user commonly does. Service mode is condition which some service action (e.g. Clear EEPROM, print EEPROM data, clear waste ink counter, destination set, etc) can be accessed. Special mode is used to back up ink level data.

User mode & service mode are available for: BJC series, S series, i series (including XNU I series), PIXMA series, MP/MPC/MX series. While special mode available only for ip1200/1600/2200.

Here is the explanation:

Ip1200/1600/2200 are first generation of canon printer that use memory chip in cartridge.

When we install new original cartridge into the printer, then ink level will be displayed properly in computer monitor. Problem occurs when we change the cartridge with another cartridge, and we want reinstall the previous cartridge. The computer will display ‘Ink Level Unknown’, then we need to press Resume/Cancel button one or two times depend on number of cartridge that installed. To solve this problem, we need to back up ink level data that can be accessed in special mode (not service mode) so that ink level of previous cartridge can be restore and displayed properly.

Reset Waste Ink Absorber Counter Without replacing Ink Absorber. Is it wise?

Some of us probably has ever experienced that our printer ink absorber is full. Then we find out EEPROM Resetter and it user guide in the web. Thanks god, we finally got it. After using this software we replace ink absorber, abracadabra, and the printer run properly without showing message “Waste Ink Absorber is Full”. Is the problem over? Frankly, it is not recommended to reset waste ink counter without replacing ink absorber. I do not suggest you to do this more than one times. Why? Here is the explanation. The printer counts every droplet that has made for each colour and records total number of droplet overall. When the droplet that has made rise to 95 % of ink absorber capacity, printer shows message “Waste Ink Absorber Almost Full” until the printer stop to operate.

If you reset waste ink counter without replacing ink absorber, means that you are about to overload ink absorber. If you only do this one time, it may be tolerable. Be carefull if you do this more than one time, because it can flood your printer and harm other part. As a simple example, often ink flood make feed roller become dirt and leave some track on media surface. In some case, ink contact electrical part cause short circuit, make big trouble to your printer. So, be carefull if you reset waste ink counter without replacing ink absorber. It strongly recommended that you replace ink absorber in case of waste ink counter reset. All right, I hope this will be useful for you all.

Ink Cartridge, Cartridge & Print head

In inkjet printer terminology, we often hear following part name: ink cartridge, cartridge, and print head. These three parts are different thing. They are categorized in consumable part. So they will be worn out.

Ink cartridge (also called ink tank) is storage where the ink stored.

Picture 1. Ink Cartridge (Ink Tank)

Print head is part that produces bubble by thermal process (ink heating process) before it being dropped to media surface. Ink is to be installed in print head.

Picture 2. Printhead

The integration between ink cartridge (ink tank) and print head which is integrated in one assembly called cartridge. In other word, cartridge contains ink tank and print head. Note that ink cartridge (ink tank), cartidge, and print head are different. Have nice day!

Identify Error Indicator of Canon Inkjet Printer

Our topic today is How to Identify Error Indicator of Canon inkjet printer. First, we should understand indication shown by LED indicator. Each phenomenon is represented by flashing LED. ERROR in the printer is represented by Blinking in Orange (Alarm LED) or combination of Orange (Alarm LED) and Green (Power LED). And the PROCESS is represented by Blinking in Green.
There are two types of error indicated by blinking LED. Blinking in orange (Alarm LED) indicates OPERATOR CALL ERROR and blinking in orange/green alternately indicates SERVICE CALL ERROR. Please check here for more details about error type of Canon printer.
Each error indicator mentioned above has certain count. How to count error indicator that indicated by flashing LED?. Well, take a look at your printer. For the first time the printer turned on, power LED (green) will flash and immediately goes standby about 5 seconds then the printer starts blinking in certain number with interval about 2 seconds. The end of count is when the power LED standby about 5 second again. Afterward the process will cycle from the beginning.
How many times LED indicator blinks tells us what is the error occurs on the printer.
