Error Message: More than one ink installed

Description:
Ink Detection Error

Related Model:
Canon pixma ip3300,3500,4200,4500,5200,6600,6700,ix4000,5000,pro9000,9500
mp500,520,530,820,mx700,800,6700

Here is the example of this problem i found in a site.
"I have a Canon Pixma MP500 all-in-one printer, and I have been receiving sporadic error messages. Either an ink is missing or “Error Number : 1681 More than one ink tank of the following color is installed. Magenta [8] Use only one ink tank per color at a time.” - both errors point to the Magenta ink tank."

Summary:
This problem appears in canon printer that uses ink cli series (e.g cli8,pg5b). As usual, printer will perform initialize test including in detection test. In this case, printer detects that two or more identical ink installed in print head. Ink cli series have built in chip to store information such as ink identity, ink level, etc. If this chip is fault then printer cannot collect the information from it. But in some cases (e.g short circuitry in the chip) it's possible that the chip harms other part such as carriage unit (carriage part). Since they are connected in parallel, it's often that carriage unit is wrong in detecting the ink. Beware of this problem!. Installing new ink tank to the printer with this current problem cause new ink damage too. So, if you got this problem please don't take any risk!. It strongly recommended that you replace carriage part and suspected ink tank.

How To Reset Ink Level of Fine Cartridge

I got some question ask how to reset ink level of fine cartridge such as pg40/cl41 and pg830/cl831 due to usage of refill ink . Hmm, I think this is great issue to discuss.

As a matter of fact, ink level of fine cartridge cannot be reset permanently. So, how to fix low ink message shows in status monitor of the printer?. There are 2 ways: by deactivating ink level detection function and by resetting ink level by using software iptool or mptool universal tools.  iptool used for ip series while mptool used for mp series. In this chance, we will discuss the second way.

These software (iptool & mptool), as far as i know, not officially released by Canon. It is probably third party software (any idea friend? tell me). I found it unpurposely in the web. When I try this software, ink level can be successfully reset and display bar in status monitor shows level 100% full.

To reset ink level by using this software perform these steps:

Using iptool (model used in this example is ip1880)

  • Make sure that printer driver has been installed.
  • Run iptool

Pict 1. Ink level before reset
  • Reset ink counter by clicking Reset Black & Reset Colour button.
  • Now ink level has been 100 % for each colour.

Pict 2. Ink level after reset is 100 % for each colour.

Note: Procedure using mptools is similar with using iptools.

Some notice in using these software:
  • iptool works only on model: ip1200/1300/1600/1700/1800 series/
  • mptool works only on model: mp150/160/170/180/450/
  • Do not installed the cartridge that ink level has been reset to another printer for ink level will be back to original condition.
  • Do not installed another cartridge in printer that used in resetting ink level for the same reason mentioned above.
After using these software I come to the conclusion:
  • These software can reset ink level of fine cartridge tentatively, not permanently due to condition mentioned above.
  • These software reset ink level of fine cartridge by manipulating ink level data that read and stored in printer but not reset memory chip of fine cartridge (since it cannot?!!).
  • These software does not support model not listed.
  • Ink level data shows properly as new cartridge as long as the cartridge is not changed.
